1984 was published in the post WW2 era of the late 1940s yet it is still so poignant today, some 75 years later.
The plot is of course very well known - Winston's personal plight against The Party - an all encompassing state where Big Brother is always watching and history is rewritten on a daily basis to fit the current policy.
I consider myself pretty pro surveillance state. However the way the state was portrayed in this novel made me watch over my shoulder continuously for at least a week. This book utterly shocked me and made me seriously question my values and loyalties.
Orwell's description of 'Room 101' and everything that follow within it was the most chilling thing I have ever read/watched/experienced!! I wanted to scream in agony as I felt every moment of pain poor Winston was living. 2+2=5 will live with me forever.
1984 - READ THIS BOOK.
5/5
