The Girls - Emma Cline

The Girls tells the story of Evie Boyd's summer. The book is largely set in the hazy 1960s. Evie is 14 years old. Evie meets a group of girls who are in a cult.

The book explores teenage Evie's various relationships from when she initially meets the girls, to when she leaves home to join the cult and throughout the heady, drug filled, disarray of life in the cult. The book is also set in the present day and reflects on life in the cult leading up to a murder.

However, this is not a book about cult leaders, sex and death. It's a book about women's power and place in society. The book beautifully captures the desires of women to be attractive, wanted, needed and admired by others - primarily other women. This is demonstrated by 14 year old Evie's unapologetic coming of age and still relevant as she reflects on her life and the circumstances that lead her to her present.

I could not put this book down and found it completely intoxicating. This book won't change your life but I think most women will resonate with Evie Boyd.

4/5
